A well known auctioneer who was once a butler to one of Anglesey’s biggest landowners is set to appear on a new BBC programme presented by Nigel Havers.
Simon Bower, is senior auctioneer and newly appointed director of Morgan Evans & Co, and is a familiar face to regulars at the Gaerwen Auction Centre.
Now Simon is about to be introduced to a whole new audience as expert valuer for BBC programme The Bidding Room.
The BBC One daytime series presented by Nigel Havers will be set in an emporium in the Yorkshire countryside where a group of expert dealers will attempt to outbid one another to buy extraordinary items brought in by the public.
Morgan Evans managing director Sheila Simpson said: “We have been aware of Simon’s extensive knowledge of antiques and collectables for very long time.
“He is a hardworking and valued member of staff. and we were delighted that he joined our board of directors in 2019.
“I am sure that he will be able to add a great deal to this new programme and that the members of the public taking part will benefit hugely from his help and advice as our customers do already.”
Simon, now 52, left school to work for Sir George and Lady Meyrick as their butler/housekeeper at Bodorgan Hall, Anglesey. Sadly his mother became ill shortly afterwards and he left this employment to look after her.
He subsequently joined Morgan Evans in 1987 as a saleroom assistant to Mr Rogers Jones. When Mr Rogers Jones left in 1992 Simon took over his role as antiques auctioneer.
Simon had an early introduction to the world of antiques through his grandmother, Janet Bower, who was a noted dealer in the 60s 70s and 80s and ran several shops and art galleries.
Simon said: “I feel a great sense of honour and pride to have been appointed a company director at Morgan Evans, a company that has been, and continues to be a huge part of my life. I look forward to the exciting times ahead.”
