Anglers at the ready as salmon make eye-catching appearance

A video has been posted on social media showing a school of salmon leaping out of the water near Rockingham.

Excitement is building among recreational fishers in Perth, with salmon starting to appear at popular fishing spots.

Cooler ocean currents along the west coast brought an early start to the season in the state's south in the lead up to Easter, with fishers flocking to beaches.

Now anglers in Perth have taken to social media with videos of hundreds of salmon leaping out of the water around Rockingham.

Recfishwest spokesman Matt Gillett said the organisation had received numerous reports of salmon schools in the Perth area.

"We've heard of schools in Cockburn sound and around Rockingham, and also Rottnest Island," he said.

He cautioned that really big schools with larger fish were yet to be seen in Perth waters, but thought that would happen in the coming two or three weeks.

"We only hope that we see a migration similar to what we've seen in the last couple of years where we've had lots and lots of fish en masse," Mr Gillett said.

Water quality concerns spark warning

The Rockingham fish sightings come as the Water Corporation warns people not to swim, dive, kayak or fish within one kilometre of a wastewater outlet four kilometres off the Cape Peron coast.

Testing of water near the outlet has been showing elevated microbiology levels since mid-February, and this has been attributed to the recent major upgrade of the Woodman Point Wastewater Treatment plant.

Last month more than 150 dead mullet and some jellyfish washed up on the Safety Bay foreshore, but it has not been determined if there is a link.
