Anger over removal of historic Wirral street lamps 'chipping away at character of area'

People have spoken of their anger about the removal of historic street lamps in Wirral.

Residents took to social media to complain about the demise of "the last of the lantern style lampposts" close to the sea front in Egremont in Wallasey with one person calling their removal an "absolute disgrace."

Posting a picture of the lamp on social media, local resident Chris Forager, said: "The last of the lantern style lampposts down at the Egremont Ferry about to be pulled up, all replaced by the characterless new lampposts.

"It's seems a shame that items that add such character to a place are removed.

"If it was an energy saving thing then can the old ones not be adapted?

"Might seem a boring post to some but it's bits like this that chip away at the character of the area."

His post sparked dozens of comments by angry residents, with one person saying: "Walked along there last night, we now have new tall LED lighting on bog standard poles, why they couldn't have upgraded the original ones is beyond me."

Another said: "These type of lampposts give such character to an area, if visiting anywhere in the British isles that is beautiful and has heritage you will find these lampposts" adding that its removal was an "absolute disgrace."

One person said: "Such a shame, don't know why they couldn't stay."

Another added: "Why not just leave them for decorative purposes?

"We have one right outside our front gate. It (and others) have been converted to LED's. Perfect!"

A spokesperson for Wirral council said structural problems with the column of the street lamp had led to its removal.

The council spokesperson said: "The columns have been replaced for safety as the original cast iron columns, which are in excess of 60 years old, failed a structural assessment.

“The replacement works are part of a wider upgrade of streetlights across Wirral as part of the LED replacement programme.”
