Anger over 'dangerous' and 'rotting' boats off Wirral coast

Boats which have been left 'rotting' off the Wirral coast are causing a "dangerous'" obstruction for neighbours according to a local councillor.

The foreshore at Heswall on the Wirral has ended up littered with dozens of boat hulls in recent years, which local councillor Andrew Hodson says are "filled with water and jagged metal."

The Conservative councillor, who has represented the ward for 28 years, said: "A lot of local people are concerned about the state of Heswall shore.

"There are a lot of old boats on the foreshore. It's unsightly and dangerous and a lot are filled with water and jagged metal."

The councillor says he has met with local agencies with the aim of finding the owners and cleaning up the shore.

He said: "People are sort of just leaving them there, they're going to work on them and then leave them.

"The shoreline is now full of rotting hulks, and that's something we will bring under control as in Meols.

"It's harder in Heswall though as they are stuck in the mud."

Earlier this year, Wirral council issued a plea for boat owners to come forward in nearby Meols after residents complained about dozens of rotting boat hulls in that area, a short distance up the shoreline from Heswall.

The owners of boats considered dangerous were due to be issued notices requesting immediate removal with all others given 28-days notice to make arrangements to move the vessels.

The council said they would consider taking legal actions against those that hadn't moved after that time.
