Anger over damage caused to Clifton Downs by illegal car meet

'Extremely unhappy' - protectors of Bristol's Clifton Downs have reacted to an unauthorised car meet attended by more than 300 motorists.

Police were called last night (August 23) after people in the area reported motorists wheeling their cars around, revving their engines and speeding down local roads.

And pictures taken today show some of the damage to the ground left by the vehicles, with many parking on the grass alongside Ladies Mile while the event took place.

Bristol City Councillor, Don Alexander, who is on the Downs Committee, said, to hold such an event, permission was required and a payment normally made.

However, in this case no-one had contacted the committee.

He said: "We have procedures in place - and in this case they were not followed.

"I think I speak for everyone on the committee when I say I am extremely unhappy about what I saw this morning. To see people have been driving on the Downs like this is frustrating."

Councillor Alexander said he expected a parks team would be inspecting the damage shortly for potential repairs.

"Things like this cost money, money we do budget for, but money we could spend on other projects. There is a reason we have a procedure in place.

"If anyone else is thinking about holding any event on The Downs, they must contact the Downs Committee first."

Police were called to the incident last night.

They took to social media to confirm their presence and warn of speeding drivers in roads around Clifton.

A spokesman said: "Officers are at the scene and will not tolerate dangerous driving and will not allow public roads to be used as a race track."
