Anger at Sydney tourists who 'delivered COVID-19 to the Shoalhaven'

A restaurant on the NSW South Coast is the latest venue to close after two patrons tested positive for COVID-19.

A restaurant on the NSW South Coast is the latest venue to close after two patrons tested positive for COVID-19.

Wildginger restaurant at Huskisson said on Saturday two people from Sydney dined with them and yesterday both tested positive to the virus.

On social media the owners said none of its staff had tested positive.

"We are devastated at the news of this and will be closed for the next two weeks whilst our affected staff are in mandatory, two-week quarantine," the Facebook post said.

The restaurant also left a message on its answering machine.

"Unfortunately we have had a case of a visitor from outside the region and that has shut us down for the time being," the message explained.

Links to Tangara School cluster in Sydney

Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) has confirmed the two people who were infectious attended the restaurant on Saturday, August 8 from 7:45pm to 10:30pm.

In a statement the health service said the people were from outside the area and linked with the Tangara School for Girls' cluster and were counted in the public health alert issued by NSW Health on August 11, 2020.

It said patrons and staff who were at the venue at the same time had been instructed to self-isolate for 14 days and to get tested for COVID-19 if directed or if they developed symptoms.

Director of Public Health, Curtis Gregory said the Health Service was notified of the situation on Monday afternoon and started contact tracing.

He said both people did the right thing and were tested as soon as they learned of their link to the school.

"I understand there's a lot of concern in the community around if they were travelling while they were infectious, that's not the case."

"Both of them were asymptomatic and neither of them had been classified as close contacts so they were both doing the right thing." He said.

Shoalhaven Deputy Mayor Patricia White has expressed concern about the potential impact on the region that was already devastated from fires and floods.

"I am just fearful now that it is in the Shoalhaven and this is yet another disaster that we have got in the Shoalhaven after so much we have faced this year," she said.

"I don't think that people are going to be too happy about the tourist who came down here and delivered COVID to the Shoalhaven because it is quite unacceptable."

'Who would do that?

Councillor White also expressed her despair about news an Ulladulla COVID-19 testing clinic was broken into last night.

"I cannot even understand who would do that in these times," she said.

Council CEO Stephen Dunshea urged those who were in Huskisson over the weekend to monitor for symptoms and to get tested.

"The health of the community is our main priority, and I strongly advise those who were at Huskisson over the weekend to monitor for symptoms and get tested at a testing facility near you," he said.

"Please continue to remain vigilant, follow NSW Health advice, and if you are feeling unwell stay in and arrange to get tested."

The Local Health District said it had free community COVID-19 assessment clinics located at Wollongong, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven, and Milton Ulladulla Hospitals.

Free testing is also available at the GP respiratory clinics located at Sanctuary Point (195 Kerry Street, Sanctuary Point) and Ulladulla (114 Princes Highway Ulladulla, in the carpark behind Anytime Fitness).

It said to meet any increased demand for testing ISLHD nursing staff would be working with the Sanctuary Point Ulladulla Respiratory Clinic to provide additional testing capacity.

The clinic, at 195 Kerry Street, Sanctuary Point, has extended its hours from 8am-8pm, Wednesday-Friday and 8am-5pm this weekend.
