Anger at 'dangerous' off-road bikers who are 'showing off' in Bulwell

Noisy off-road bikers have left a Nottinghamshire town's residents frustrated worried about future accidents. Police said they received a string of reports about nuisance off road bikes in Bulwell on the weekend starting July 23.

After spotting two bikes down a side road, officers sized a bike after the rider stalled the vehicle. The town's residents said bikers were 'showing off' in a way that could be dangerous to residents.

Melvin Lloyd, 77, who is retired and lives in Bulwell, said: "I do not like noisy bikes - they are showing off. These things are not meant for the road, these things are okay off the road.

"They're mostly youngsters causing trouble, which I think a little bit is part of being young. But sometimes they get away with a lot and it is too much.

Mr Lloyd, who owns a motorcycle, added: "I don't mind cutting through on my own bike - but its a proper road bike. I like the freedom of it really.

"Some bikers are inconsiderate but most are nice as pie. But the off-roaders are not supposed to used in town and I don't like those quad bikes either."

John Askew, 79, a retiree from Bulwell, said: "It doesn't bother me that much. You hear the occasional one, but they don't cause any big problems for me.

"You see it regularly even down the town centre, they shoot through here. The noise is the annoying thing, and if they are irresponsible that could worry people.

"I'm old, but older and less spritely people might not be able to move out the way as quick if they are on the pavement or in a park.

A Bulwell resident, who did not want to be named, added: "I think it happens a lot in the estates and parks. It's always pointlessly loud and annoying.

"It is like a lot of these things, it seems to be mostly younger people. I'm glad the police are doing something about it."

There have been problems with bikers driving around Bulwell in the past. Police previously issued an appeal at the start of the year following increased reports of vehicles being driven "erratically" around Bulwell Forest Recreation Ground and the surrounding area.

A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Police, posting on Facebook about the recent complaints about off-road bikers, said: "There has been numerous calls over the weekend about nuisance off road bikes in Bulwell so the Beat Team decided to proactively patrol the area to try and tackle the issue. And guess what? It wasn't long until they got one.

"After spotting two bikes down a side road, they shot into action and managed to stop the bike from making its escape. It did help that the rider couldn't get it started after stalling it.

"So that's one less illegal bike on the streets of Bulwell today. If you are aware of any nuisance bikes in your area and know where they are being stored, you can contact us anonymously on 101 and report it."
