Anger at anti-Brexit graffiti tagged on tunnel in The Meadows

Graffiti attacking Brexit, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Conservative Party has appeared on an underpass in The Meadows.

The expletive-laden vandalism was spotted in Robin Hood Way and was condemned by the Tory party and people living nearby.

Residents passing through the tunnel said vandalism and antisocial behaviour was a regular issue there.

Calls have also been made for CCTV to be installed at the underpass.

The tunnel has been targeted by graffiti in the past, with broken bottles, dog mess and litter being strewn across the ground.

Jason Ingham, 49, of The Meadows said: "It's not the nicest thing to see when walking to work. The frustration of Brexit is clear but I can't stand graffiti.

"I'm sure it'll get removed soon, but there's always things being painted on these walls of the underpass.

"People work hard to make the area look nice and it gets ruined by yobs."

Sarah-ann Smith, a 30-year-old mum from The Meadows, added: "Graffiti is nothing new for the tunnel, but the anti Brexit stuff is. It shows the anger people are feeling. But it looks bad. Get rid of it. Little kids walk through here."

Labour Councillor for Bilborough and city council portfolio holder for communities, Rebecca Langton, condemned the vandalism.

She said: "The Meadows today (Tuesday October 22) is littered with offensive graffiti featuring this tag.

"It’s been reported and our brilliant teams will be out quickly to clean it off - but what a waste of our resources. Most of us are proud of our neighbourhoods and this kind of thing has no place here."

A Conservative Party spokesman added: “Graffiti of any sort is utterly unacceptable. Expressing strongly held views about an issue in this way is never an excuse for vandalism.”

Nottingham City Council is responsible for clearing the graffiti once it is reported.

A spokesman for the authority added: "People can report issues through our 24-hour anti-social behaviour helpline on 0115 915 2020 or online at www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/report-it."
