Anger as thick black smoke belches out over Fife due to 'unplanned flaring' at Mossmorran

Thick black smoke is currently belching out over Fife due to "unplanned" flaring at Mossmorran.

ExxonMobil UK, who operate the ethylene plant near Cowdenbeath, said that the flaring was happening due to a "process interruption" and that their engineers were working hard to resolve the issue.

Flaring usually happens when a problem has arisen and gas which cannot be processed properly is burned.

And there has been significant concern among people living in close proximity to the plant on the back of today's incident.

Fife councillor Darren Watt tweeted to say that residents "are worried and at the very least deserve some assurances". He added that a number of people had been in touch about the issue.

SEPA also tweeted to say that they are "aware of and responding to" the unplanned flaring.

Last year SEPA issued final warning notices after a "serious flaring incident" at the plant. They said that environmental licences had been breached and increased monitoring would be happening as a result.
