Anger as Edinburgh's rule-breaking drivers 'shout' at pedestrians to move on Victoria Street

Locals have expressed further frustration at vehicles ignoring pedestrian zones in Edinburgh over the weekend.

Edinburgh Council issued temproary road closures following the coronavirus outbreak in a bid to make  the streets  safer.

The aim is to allow pedestrians to social distance on the city's street, while making room for queuing and outdoor seating at bars and restaurants.

But it appears that not all drivers are adhering to the new rules, with Victoria Street emerging as a hotspot for vehicles ignoring the closure.

As reported by Edinburgh Live , a passerby previously blasted that "nothing had been achieved" after watching "multiple vehicles" use the road, which connects the Grassmarket to George IV Bridge.

And, once again, locals are voicing there concerns as one passerby say they spotted an "Asda delivery van" and "Uber taxi" speed up the road on Saturday.

They added that some drivers even "shouted" at pedestrians, while ignoring the signs.

Locals have raised concerns over the effectiveness of the road closures, with traffic offences ultimately the responsibility of police officers to enforce.

Transport and Environment Vice Convener Councillor Karen Doran said: “Victoria Street has been closed to general traffic as part of our Spaces for People programme, helping to create more room for people to spend time in local shops, cafes and restaurants while maintaining physical distancing.

“The street’s closure has the appropriate legal signage but we are in the process of installing additional advanced signage to alert drivers to the closure. Anyone who chooses to ignore this is putting pedestrians in danger and risks committing a criminal offence.”
