Anger as 90-year-old man left to try and move IKEA sofa into his home alone

A 90-year-old Nottinghamshire man was left attempting to move a heavy sofa into his own home after delivery drivers left it on his driveway, it has been claimed.

The elderly man's son has now labelled furniture giant IKEA's customer service as 'appalling' after the incident on Friday, September 25.

Trevor Brown, 61, said his father, James, had ordered the two-seater sofa, which weighed 60 pounds, to be delivered to his property in Aspley.

However, Trevor, of Derby, claims delivery drivers simply took a picture of the product and placed it on his drive before leaving.

This led to James attempting to bring the sofa into him home by himself.

Trevor said: "They just dragged it on the driveway at 4pm, took a photograph and and then took off.

"It's totally unacceptable. Have they got no PPE? I want an explanation - and I was so angry when I found out what happened. You can't treat a 90-year-old man like that."

Family friends and neighbours eventually helped James to get the sofa indoors, but after paying a £39 delivery charge fee, Trevor is demanding answers from the Swedish furniture company.

"They told me over the phone it was because of the pandemic that's going on," he continued.

"But then how do people fit boilers and carry out repairs? I understand there is a pandemic on, but this is just appalling customer service."

The pair had purchased the sofa from the IKEA store at Giltbrook Retail Park, and say the staff there were "lovely and very helpful".

An IKEA spokesperson said: “We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.

"This is a difficult time for everyone and we’re working hard to ensure that we provide the service our customers expect, in line with government guidance and any local restrictions.

"The health and safety of our co-workers, customers and communities remains our number one priority."
