Anger after Rutherglen Orange Lodge is vandalised with sickening graffiti

An Orange Lodge in Rutherglen was daubed with sickening sectarian graffiti for the second time during lockdown.

Police were called on Wednesday morning after yobs used dark green paint to vandalise the social club building on Cathcart Road with offensive phrases drawn on a brick wall.

Abbreviations of “kill all huns” and “f*** the Queen” were discovered by shocked residents alongside the phrase “Cmilk p*****”.

Ian McNeil, Executive Officer for the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland, has condemned the sickening hate crime attack - which is one of several during lockdown.

He said: “We are disappointed that yet again it’s another anti-protestant hate crime with an attack on one of our Orange halls.

“There have been several during the current pandemic which is very disappointing indeed. We expect there should be condemnation from the Scottish Government and various other politicians like there are when there are hate crimes on other sections of the community.

“When we’ve got the government telling everyone to stay at home and all the rest of it, we’ve got people out there committing hate crimes - it’s absolutely disgusting.”

The Reformer was contacted by furious locals after the graffiti was discovered.

One said: "When are the authorities going to take this seriously and get something done about it? It never seems to lead anywhere. The Protestant people of Rutherglen are being directly targeted here."

Graffiti had previously been discovered on the same building in May last year.

Of the latest incident, a Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “On Wednesday, 13 January, 2021, Police Scotland received a report of graffiti on the outside walls of the Orange Lodge Social Club in Cathcart Road, Rutherglen.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
