Angels superstar Mike Trout makes decision on 2020 season: ‘I’m playing’

Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout, the reigning AL MVP and the consensus best player in baseball, is about to become a father for the first time. Trout and his wife, Jessica, are expecting a baby in early August – and given the health risks posed by continually traveling the country amid a pandemic, Trout said at the beginning of the month that he didn’t “feel that comfortable” with the situation.

Via the Los Angeles Times:

“It’s going to be tough. I’ve got to be really cautious these next couple weeks. I don’t want to test positive. I don’t want to bring it back to my wife. It’s a tough situation we’re in.”

Trout has continued to train with the Angels and prepare for the 2020 regular season, and on Wednesday, Trout confirmed that he’s going to play this season, but will be leaving the team for the birth of his child. In a Zoom call, Trout reiterated the importance of abiding by the health guidelines and minimizing the risk of contracting COVID-19. Once Trout leaves the team, he will need two consecutive negative tests at least 24 hours apart to rejoin the Angels.

Via the Angels:

“They’ll be testing every day. I’m not sure about a quarantine. But obviously I gotta be there for the newborn, my first one.”
