DETROIT _ The Tigers' offensive woes on Sunday couldn't be blamed on the home plate umpire.
The Tigers lost, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park and dropped two of three games in the series to the Angels. The Tigers were shut out for the ninth time this season.
Angels lefty Tyler Skaggs struck out six Tigers over six scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and two walks.
The Tigers lost 3-2 on Saturday night and were upset with the way home plate umpire Mike Everitt was calling balls and strikes. Everitt ejected Victor Martinez, J.D. Martinez, hitting coach Wally Joyner and manager Brad Ausmus on Saturday night.
On Sunday, Ex-Tiger Jefry Marte hit a two-run home run off Anibal Sanchez in the fifth inning to break the scoreless tie. Marte is now 3-for-4 with two home runs lifetime against Sanchez.
The Angels added three runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-0 lead. Sanchez gave up three consecutive singles by Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and C.J. Cron to load the bases with no outs. Cameron Maybin made a nice diving attempt at the ball hit by Pujols, but the ball popped out of his glove. It was initially ruled a catch, but the Angels challenged and the call was overturned.
Adrelton Simmons and Marte followed with sacrifice flies to center, then Nick Buss hit an RBI double, ending the day for Sanchez.
Sanchez allowed five runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. He didn't allow a walk and struck out two.
The Tigers stranded Miguel Cabrera at third in the fourth inning. Cabrera, who had a single in the first, hit his 27th double of the season three innings later. He went to third on a fly ball to right by Victor Martinez. J.D. Martinez struck out swinging. After a walk to Justin Upton, Casey McGehee grounded into a fielder's choice.
Cameron Maybin hit a two-out double in the eighth, the Tigers' third hit of the day.
Mark Lowe gave up a triple, then struck out the next four batters he faced over 1 1/3 innings for the Tigers.
