Angels pull off wild, walk-off win over Astros to snap six-game losing streak

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Late-inning rallies kept the Angels in the game, but rookie Trey Cabbage provided some of the final heroics of the night.

Cabbage, who made his MLB debut Friday, scored on a throwing error by Houston Astros shortstop Grae Kessinger in the 10th inning to lift the Angels to a dramatic, 13-12 victory in 10 innings.

The Angels (46-47) managed to recover from deficits of six and three runs to earn their second win in 12 games and snap a six-game losing streak. It was the third walk-off win by the Angels this season.

“To say that was needed is an understatement,” Angels manager Phil Nevin said.

Shohei Ohtani ignited the Angels’ second comeback of the night with his MLB-leading 33rd home run in the ninth. Taylor Ward, Mickey Moniak and Eduardo Escobar followed with singles to load the bases. A passed ball by catcher Martin Maldonado, with Mike Moustakas at the plate, allowed Ward to score. Hunter Renfroe’s RBI single tied the score before the game went into extras.

In the seventh, home runs by Zach Neto and Moustakas and an RBI single by Escobar helped erase a six-run deficit and tie the game 9-9. Reliever Matt Moore then gave up a two-run home run to Houston’s Chas McCormick in the eighth inning.

Despite the bullpen’s struggles, the Angels came through in the 10th. With Cabbage starting on second, Neto flied out before the Astros reliever Phil Maton intentionally walked Ohtani. Taylor Ward then hit into a ground out to second, but Kessinger’s throwing error to first to complete the double play went wide, allowing Cabbage to score.
