Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs has died from unspecified causes at the age of 27. The franchise announced his death in a statement and postponed its upcoming game Monday night against the Rangers.
“It is with great sorrow that we report Tyler Skaggs passed away earlier today in Texas,” the Angels said in a statement posted to Twitter. “Tyler has, and always will be, an important part of the Angels Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Carli, and his entire family during this devastating time.”
In a subsequent statement made to the Los Angeles Times, the team declined to offer a cause of death.
Skaggs, who would’ve turned 28 on July 13, pitched for the Angels just two days ago in a 4-0 loss to the Athletics. He had made 15 appearances in total this season, recording a 7-7 record and 4.29 ERA in 79.2 innings. He also pitched for the Diamondbacks, who drafted him in the first round of the 2009 MLB Draft.
Rangers GM Jon Daniels said his club got word of Skaggs’ death roughly 90 minutes before it was announced. In a statement, that club confirmed the postponement of the game, which will be replayed in August, and offered condolences to Skaggs’ family, friends and colleagues.
