Angels open against the Cubs next year; Dodgers open at San Diego

Sept. 08--For the second time in four years, the Angels will open the season against a National League club.

The Angels will open the 2016 season at home April 5 against the Chicago Cubs -- managed by former Angels bench coach Joe Maddon.

The Dodgers will open April 4 at San Diego. The Dodgers' home opener is April 12 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Among other highlights in the 2016 schedules, as released Tuesday by Major League Baseball:

--The Dodgers and Angels will play four games next season, down from six this season.

--The Dodgers will play host to the Boston Red Sox on Aug. 5-7, a weekend series. The Dodgers face other American League East opponents at home (the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays) and on the road (the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays).

--As the Times reported in July, MLB once again has declined to schedule an Albert Pujols return to St. Louis. The Angels and St. Louis Cardinals will meet for the second time since Pujols signed with the Angels, again in Anaheim. The Angels will face other NL Central opponents at home (the Cubs and Cincinnati Reds) and on the road (the Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates).

--The Dodgers close the regular season on the road, at San Francisco. The Angels close at home, against the Houston Astros.
