LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Angels' two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani led the American League with 526,608 votes among designated hitters as Major League Baseball on Monday announced the early results in fan voting for this year's All-Star Game, scheduled to be held in Denver on July 13.
J.D. Martinez of the Boston Red Sox is in second with 293,757 votes, about 230,000 ballots behind Ohtani.
The voting will be conducted in two phases, with the first round of voting through June 24 to determine the top three vote-getters at each position (with nine outfielders).
The second round of voting starts on June 28, with the final results to be announced on July 1.
Pitchers are not part of the fan voting, and all players, including the reserves, will be announced on July 4.
As a hitter, the 26-year-old Ohtani has batted .269 with 17 home runs and 45 RBIs as of June 13.
As a pitcher, he has a 2-1 record with a 2.85 ERA.
