Angels lose a pair of split squad games

March 19--Colorado 6, Angels 6

Kansas City 7, Angels 4

AT THE PLATE: In the home half of the split-squad in Tempe, Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar and shortstop Cliff Pennington each went three for three. Pennington scored two runs. Second baseman Rey Navarro hit a three-run homer and had a sacrifice fly. Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Kole Calhoun each went hitless in three at-bats. ... In Surprise, Andrelton Simmons had three hits, all singles. C.J. Cron singled twice. Capping a mini-rally, minor league outfielder Brandon Bayardi hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning.

ON THE MOUND: Garrett Richards started for the Angels in Tempe and threw more than 70 pitches over five innings. He struck out three and did not walk a batter, giving up six hits and three runs. ... Right-hander Joe Smith struggled to complete his scheduled inning, giving up two runs on two walks and three hits. Right-hander Cam Bedrosian attempted to finish two innings but could not, walking two and allowing a run. Right-hander Mike Morin fired his sixth scoreless inning of the spring. ...In Surprise, right-hander Cory Rasmus threw a scoreless inning, striking out two. Right-handers Al Alburquerque and Deolis Guerra each allowed runs.

EXTRA BASES: In Tempe, outfielder Mike Fish was brought up from minor league camp for the game as an extra outfielder but did not appear. Had he entered for Mike Trout, it would've made for quite the fishy story. Journeyman outfielder Mike Carp has never played for the Angels. ... The Angels sold out their home stadium for the second time this spring, with 9,475 fans in attendance. ... Simmons continued to bat as the designated hitter because a case of dead arm is preventing him from starting at shortstop. Catcher Geovany Soto, dealing with a similar issue, was off Friday.

UP NEXT: Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, 1 p.m. PDT at Tempe Diablo Stadium. On the air: TV: FS West; Radio: 830.
