Tony Kushner’s 1985 play has become a seminal American theatre work, winning the Tony award for best play twice, and the Pulitzer prize for drama. Set in New York city at the height of the Aids epidemic in the 1980s, it challenged attitudes to HIV.
The story follows Prior Walter, a young gay man diagnosed with AIDS and abandoned by his lover. Desperate and alone, he is visited in a dream by an angel that tasks him with saving humanity from themselves.
Prior must navigate a range of new obstacles, including meeting a closeted homophobic lawyer, a drug-addicted housewife, and facing his own feelings of abandonment. Black Swan artistic director Kate Cherry directs this Western Australia premiere, assisted by Joe Lui.
