AT THE PLATE: Daniel Nava went two for two with a double and a walk as the designated hitter against Cincinnati in Goodyear, Ariz. Left fielder Nick Buss went three for three and robbed a home run. Infielder Jefry Marte hit a three-run home run.
Against the White Sox in Tempe, Ariz., Mike Trout homered on a first-pitch fastball from Erik Johnson. Last season, Trout declared he would swing at more first pitches but did not follow through on it. He's had several first-pitch hits this spring.
"He's developing a nice feel," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "If it happens to be on a first pitch, so be it." Trout also worked two walks and stole a base. He did not make an out. ... Outfielders Kole Calhoun and Rafael Ortega each doubled.
ON THE MOUND: Right-hander Matt Shoemaker served up three home runs and two more near-homers in three innings against the Reds. He gave up 10 hits and seven runs. ... Left-hander Hector Santiago started against the White Sox and struck out five in three innings, walking one. He threw 49 pitches, 30 for strikes. Santiago gave up a two-run home run to Dioner Navarro.
Likely bullpen members Fernando Salas, a right-hander, and Jose Alvarez, a left-hander, each threw a scoreless inning. ...Cuban right-hander Yunesky Maya, a longshot to make the team, struck out three in two innings. ... Right-handed pitching prospect Kyle McGowin gave up five runs in 1 2/3 wild innings.
EXTRA BASES: Santiago and catcher Geovany Soto combined for three outs on plays made on White Sox baserunners. Soto threw out two and Santiago picked off another. ... Monday marked the Angels' first split-squad games of the spring. They have two more scheduled.
