Angelino set to return to Man City from RB Leipzig

Angelino looks set to return to Manchester City when his loan at RB Leipzig expires after the German club's manager admitted they are unlikely to be able to afford to make his move permanent.

Spaniard Angelino rejoined City from PSV Eindhoven last summer, but he struggled to displace Benjamin Mendy and Aleks Zinchenko and was sent to Leipzig on loan in January.

There, he has impressed as a left wing-back in Julian Nagelsmann's attacking system, making 12 appearances and scoring once.

Leipzig have the option to purchase Angelino for around £25m at the end of his loan spell, which would represent a healthy profit on the £5m fee City paid PSV to buy him back last year.

However, Leipzig have previously expressed caution at paying that fee, and it seems the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic will force them to be more sensible in the transfer market.

Speaking last week, Nagelsmann said the club can only buy new players if current ones are sold, casting doubt on whether they would be able to make Angelino's move permanent.

“I think we’ll manage to get into the top four this season and gain Champions League qualification,” Nagelsmann told Bild.

“Even if that does happen, I believe we probably won’t purchase [Patrik] Schick and Angelino. We cannot waste resources, even if we do qualify for the Champions League.

“We have a rigorous plan and a budget that has to be respected. If we don’t sell players, it’s unlikely we’ll be able to bring in new ones.”
