Angelino: Manchester City consider €6m buy-back transfer for PSV Eindhoven defender

Manchester City are weighing up whether to re-sign PSV Eindhoven full-back Angelino in a €6million (£5.4m) deal.

The Premier League champions can trigger a buy-back clause in the 22-year-old’s contract, having sold him to the Dutch club last summer.

Angelino, who has reportedly attracted interest from Paris Saint-Germain, would provide low-cost cover for Oleksandr Zinchenko and Benjamin Mendy at left-back.

Though initial reports in Europe suggested that City’s buy-back clause stood at €12million, the figure is understood to be only half that amount.

Angelino joined City as a 15-year-old in 2012, making two appearances, including one in a Champions League qualifier at the start of Pep Guardiola’s reign.

The full-back spent time on loan at New York City, Girona, Mallorca and NEC Breda before moving to PSV on permanent basis.

Despite being a Spain Under-21 international, Angelino would qualify as a homegrown player as he spent more than three years registered with City before his 21st birthday.

Zinchenko is currently Guardiola’s first-choice left back, having established himself in the role amid Mendy’s persistent fitness struggles.

Mendy was signed for £51m in the summer of 2017, but has made only 22 appearances in the two years since due to a combination of injury and indiscipline.

It is thought that Angelino’s return would not mark the end of Mendy’s City career, but the 24-year-old would suddenly find himself competing with two players in his position rather than one.
