Angela Scanlon responds to rumours she could follow Ryan Tubridy as RTE Late Late Show host

TV host Angela Scanlon has rubbished rumours she would like to host the Late Late Show someday – saying “I’m more of a Saturday gal”.

The Co Meath star laughed off suggestions that she could be the next host of the Friday night chat show, which has been hosted by Ryan Tubridy for the last 12 years.

It comes in the wake of Today Show host Daithi O’Se revealing he would love to host the Late Late Show – saying it’s the highest paid gig on TV.

But Angela jokingly dismissed any suggestion she would throw her name in the hat, saying: “Would I like that show (Late Late Show)? Would you feck off,” she said laughing.

“I’m more of a Saturday gal.”

Last year, Prime Time host Miriam O’Callaghan became the first woman to present the Late Late Show in its 60 year history after host Ryan Tubridy contracted Covid-19.

Miriam presented the show for two weeks while Tubridy recovered and said that she “made history” as the first woman to ever present the show.

“I made history. I got to present The Late Late Show twice even if I only broke the glass ceiling the first time,” she said at the time.

Angela said it was lovely to see Miriam flying the flag for women on TV.

She added: “It’s lovely and it is about time. It’s about time that there is a representation on telly. I’m happy. I’m in the weekend slot. Saturday night is good for me.”

Angela is returning to our screens this autumn on RTE One with Ask Me Anything.

Guests will be asked any question unknown to them by Angela and the audience.

Angela recorded two episodes of her chat show last year with Anne Doyle and influencer James Kavanagh just before the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

But the mum-of-one said Anne and James’ episode have been axed as the chat featured audiences, which Angela said looks “a bit weird”.

She said: “They were really great episodes. It’s not a topical show but there is definitely a sense that it’s two years after the fact so you as an audience would feel a bit weird.

“We’re hitting the ground running with the new people.”

And she promised fans it won’t be like Tommy Tiernan’s chat show, admitting when she went on the comedian’s show it was the “most excruciating time of my life”.

“I’m a massive fan of Tommy and I think what we do is totally different.

"The whole tone and feel of the show. I’ve been on Tommy’s show. It’s one of the most excruciating times of my life.

“His style is different and he’s a comedian so he’s very funny. Tommy’s show feels like a therapy session to me. This is a very different tone so yes there is a sense that anything is up for grabs. That’s the hope but it is completely different.”
