Angela Rayner is elected as Labour Party deputy leader

Angela Rayner has been elected as the deputy leader of the Labour Party.

The shadow Education Secretary beat off competition from fellow MPs Richard Burgon, Ian Murray, Dawn Butler and Dr Rosena Allin-Khan.

The election of Ms Rayner, the Member of Parliament for Ashton-under-Lyne in Manchester, will not comes as a surprise to most people.

Much like Sir Keir Starmer, the new leader she will now work closely with, the 40-year-old has been the outright favourite for the role since the contest kicked-off following Labour's December election defeat.

But she the result was perhaps not as easy as some predicted, with the Ashton MP having to wait until the third round to secure victory.

She eventually secured 52.6% of the vote, with an impressive performance from the relatively unknown Dr Allin-Khan taking second place with 26.1%.

Richard Burgon came in third with 21.3%.

The result of the election was delivered in a very different way to previous contests because of the social distancing rules in place around coronavirus.

Ms Rayner is seen by some as a unifying figure who can bring different parts of the Labour Party together - after years of division and fallout.

She will start her new role with the country and the party in a state of crisis.

While Labour suffered its worst election defeat in decades in December, the situation with coronavirus is now of course the only priority for politicians.

The Labour Party and its new leadership team will be expected to hold the government to account where necessary and help to support the national effort to try and get the country through this terrible period.
