A Berlin-based production company is working on a biopic of Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The film will be scripted by Dirk Kurbjuweit, a journalist who has also written two books on Merkel. The company, known as AVE, behind the film are hoping to use an international cast and aim to release the film for 2017, at the same time as Merkel is predicted to win her fourth term.
“She is charming and known worldwide,” producer Walid Nakschbandi said in a statement. “She causes quite a stir, she gets involved. It’s time to film her life for a worldwide audience.”
There are few details known about the film but AVE have revealed that it will explore her personal and political lives. The same company is also working on a film of Anne Frank’s life, as well as a documentary.
Merkel is the child of a pastor, born in Hamburg in 1954. Her ascent to the top has been filled with fascinating plot points, including her training as a physicist, her position as the first woman to ever lead Germany and a number of headline-grabbing stories, such as her row with Obama over surveillance and her controversial austerity measures.
“I have been following Merkel’s political path for many years — critical, but always spellbound,” said Kurbjuweit. “She is the most exciting politician of our time.”
