Angela Black's bizarre butter spoon mystery solved in new episode

ITV's new drama Angela Black finally offered up an explanation for the baffling "butter spoon" scenes as the show's powerful portrayal of domestic abuse continues.

The six-part series returned to our screens last night after the debut episode showed mum-of-two Angela (Joanne Froggatt) badly beaten by her husband Olivier (Michiel Huisman) before covering up his abuse and carrying on, somewhat unconvincingly, as normal.

But the breakfast scene after the first terrifying attack left fans baffled as Angela used a spoon to scoop out butter for her toast.

It was revealed in this second episode that this method was just another way that Angela was controlled by her husband.

She opted for a spoon instead of a knife to limit her butter intake and it became clear Olivier was behind it.

During a scene in episode two, he leaned in and whispered to her while she was using the spoon, saying: "Start the day right".

Fans of the show took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the show, with 'the butter' scene becoming a pivotal point of discussion.

One user posted: "Am I being totally stupid but I don't understand the butter and spoon thing. Is it just to show how controlling he is, or is there another reason?"

Another added: "Oh my … after that I’d have put so much butter on that toast you wouldn’t be able to see the bread #AngelaBlack

A third quipped: ''I'm catching up on #AngelaBlack and this m*****f****r is limiting the butter! On top of everything else!"

A forth added: "Telling her how to butter bread, what to wear... Such a narcissistic ****head #AngelaBlack

Domestic abuse was a theme that continued into the second episode as Angela's husband Olivier becomes verbally abusive and grabs his wife's arm after he accuses her of flirting with his colleague at work dinner.

But some viewers didn't tune in for the second episode saying the drama was tedious and too slow.

One twitter user posted: "Five minutes into ANGELA BLACK episode one and someone has scooped up some butter with a spoon then used a knife to move the butter from spoon to toast. I think I've lost interest already..." #AngelaBlack

Another fan complained on social media, "I’m really not enjoying Angela Black … it’s frustrating and too slow.

Viewers can however, make up their own minds as the show will continue to air on Sundays at 9 pm on ITV.
