Angela Black on ITV: What it's about, cast and where you have seen them before

With Vigil leaving a TV drama-shaped hole in our lives, ITV may just have something to replace it with.

Angela Black is the broadcasters latest Sunday night offering which follows an isolated woman trying to leave an abusive marriage.

But it's not that simple as she soon learns a terrible secret.

ITV say that Angela’s life appears idyllic: a lovely house in suburban London, days working volunteer shifts at a dogs home, two beautiful sons and a charming, hard-working husband – Olivier.

However, beneath this façade of charmed domesticity, Angela is a victim of domestic violence. Olivier is controlling and brutal; but Angela loves him and he’s the father of her children.

Until, one day, Angela is approached by Ed – a Private Investigator - and he smashes her already strained domestic life to pieces and he reveals Olivier’s deepest secrets to Angela, and she is faced with horrifying truths about her husband and his betrayals.

But can Angela trust? And what truths will be revealed in the ferocious fight between Angela and her husband?

ITV adds: "This is a Hitchcockian thriller that follows one woman as she risks everything she holds dear to fight back against the man who has suppressed and tormented her for most of her adult life."

Joanne Froggatt and Michiel Huisman as Angela and Oliver (SCU)

The six-part series begins tonight, Sunday, October 10, and stars Downton Abbey actress Joanne Froggatt in the leading role of Angela.

Viewers may best know her for her portrayal of Anna Bates in the ITV period drama and subsequent film.

But she's also starred in Coronation Street, Bad Girls, Liar, and Dark Angel.

Playing her husband Oliver is The Flight Attendant's Michiel Huisman.

Samuel Adewunmi as Ed Harrison (ITV)

He played businessman Alex Sokolov in the HBO Max series last year opposite The Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco.

Viewers may also recognise Michiel from Game of Thrones, The Haunting of Hill House, Nashville and Orphan Black.

Taking on the role of Ed is Samuel Adewunmi best known for film The Last Tree. He's also appeared in The Watch and The Missing.

This Country and It’s A Sin star Ashley McGuire also appears as Judy.
