Angela Bassett divides viewers with her 'honest emotion' as Jamie Lee Curtis wins Oscar

Angela Bassett divided viewers as she was spotted not clapping Jamie Lee Curits ' win for best supporting actress at the Oscars.

The pair were both up for the same award at last night's 95th Academy Awards but Bassett's reaction has sparked huge debate after going viral online.

Some have called her actions "unprofessional" whilst others have defended the actress praising it as her showing "honest emotion".

Bassett, 64, was up for the award for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, whilst Curtis, 64, took home her first Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The nomination was Angela's second in her career, after she was nominated in 1994 for best fctress for her lead role in the Tina Turner biopic What's Love Got To Do With It.

Despite being favourite to win, Bassett lost to Holly Hunter who took home the best actress Oscar for her work in The Piano.

When Curtis' name was called at this year's event, fans couldn't help but notice Bassett's somber look and her apparent 'refusal' to clap.

Fellow nominees Hong Chau, Kerry Condon and Stephanie Hsu were seen applauding Curtis as she took to the stage.

Taking to social media, one person wrote: "Pretty unprofessional of her. I'm sure if she had won, Jamie would have yelled Angela's name out of sheer joy.

"That is why it is said that there are two kinds of people."

Another commented: "Angela Bassett is an amazing actress, but the sore loser vibe… It would be great to see women supporting each other, even in the face of disappointment (esp. during women’s history month)."

Someone else added: "Angela Bassett should know that if want support you have to show support."

Whilst others quipped: "It is an honest emotion Angela Basset wanted to win," and: "She was robbed!"

A poster also stated: "Angela Bassett’s reaction to Jamie Lee Curtis’ name being called…you can tell how much that Oscar would have meant to her. she is, was, and always will be incredible."

"Angela Bassett is so real for not faking a reaction," said another.

Jamie Lee Curtis was overwhelmed as she accepted the award as she excitedly mouthed to the crowd "shut up".

Accepting her award, she said: "I know it looks like I am standing up here on my own but I am not. There are hundreds of people and hundreds of people. We just won an Oscar.

"To my family, my beautiful husband, Christopher Guest, my daughters, Annie and Ruby, my sister Kelly – we just won an Oscar.

"To all of the people who have supported the genre movie's that I have made for hundreds and hundreds of thousands, we just won an Oscar together."

Looking to the ceiling, she added: "And my mother and father were both nominated for Oscars in different categories, I just won an Oscar."

Jamie Lee has enjoyed a career spanning almost 50 years and is the daughter of Hollywood icons Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis.

The actress wasn't the only Everything Everywhere All at Once star taking home an award at the ceremony, as the cast bagged seven Oscars in total.
