Angel of the North dons a giant poppy as the nation prepares to mark Remembrance Day

The Angel of the North has donned a giant poppy as the nation prepares to mark Remembrance Day.

The Gateshead landmark will be wearing a 10 foot high poppy on its chest for the next few days as a mark of respect for fallen heroes on Armistice Day.

The poppy was put in place overnight on Monday into Tuesday, and the intention is to leave it up for several days during Remembrance Week.

It will then be removed safely, leaving the sculpture in its original state.

Elsewhere in the region, Sunderland’s Penshaw Monument was among the North East landmarks to be illuminated red to commemorate the end of World War One, and to recognise the sacrifice made in other wars.

Newcastle Civic Centre and Gateshead Millennium Bridge have also turned red until the anniversary on November 11.

Sunderland City Council’s Northern Spire Bridge, Fulwell Mill, the White lighthouse in Seaburn, Keel Square, High Street West and The Beacon were illuminated red, as well as Durham Town Hall and County Hall, where a large poppy has been projected onto the front of the building.

It comes after traditional gatherings, parades and services were called off across the region due to the coronavirus pandemic.
