Angel Gomes could solve Manchester United's midfield dilemma

It was an unwelcome case of deja vu for Manchester United fans on Monday night.

A third trip to face Wolves at Molineux this year, a third trip which has not seen them win a game. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might claim a point is progress after two defeats there earlier in his reign, but for supporters it was far from the case.

After an exciting start to the new season United's bubble seemed to deflate this week, and now the United manager has a few interesting decisions to make ahead of their third fixture this weekend.

It is true United's weaknesses would be exposed at some point but it was a cold reality check under the lights at Molineux as their dominance again failed to produce the goods.

A wonder goal punished complacency in the final third, while Paul Pogba's penalty amplified the negativity which grew with every passing minute in the second-half.

One of the biggest worries for Solskjaer will be with the clunky build-up play and the way in which his side often struggled to find a way through a resilient Wolves defence.

That in itself is the caveat, and there needs to be a sense of perspective when considering the opposition. This is no longer the Wolves of Mick McCarthy or Dave Jones, but one of the savviest sides in European football, on which knows how to frustrate any top opponent.

Yet, even given the solidity at the back, United fans were left feeling disappointed by the manner in which their side perpetually came unstuck.

Jesse Lingard was hard at work in a central attacking role, but through little fault of his own was criticised by some sections of supporters for failing to control the game. It might be annoying to watch, but it is not a role in which he plays his better football.

Likewise there was some concerns over Daniel James' style of play, with his attributes still perhaps best suited as an impact sub rather than starting, particularly on his unfavoured right handside.

The issue for Solskjaer is there is not a great deal of quality at his disposal in those two particular positions, something which makes the club's reluctance to sign Christian Eriksen in the summer that bit more confusing.

United will rightfully be expected to dominate against Crystal Palace this weekend and the game could provide the perfect opportunity for Angel Gomes to showcase his talents in the first-team.

Gomes was one of many youngsters who impressed during the pre-season tour, with his sensational solo goal against Tottenham one of the highlights of his fledgling career.

The fact that the 18-year-old was absent from both provisional squads in the Premier League so far this season might make any hopes of a start on Saturday slim, but a promotion to the bench needs to be considered at least.

Not only would promoting Gomes earn credit amongst fans for Solskjaer, but it would be a welcome alternative from some of the more predictable options on the bench. The United manager received some criticism for his late introduction of changes in the draw with Wolves, but the truth was he had little to call upon.

Speaking earlier in the summer Nicky Butt suggested Gomes could 'set alight this season and do really well' and the time for his introduction might be much early than previously planned.

Two years ago Gomes announced himself into English football with a cameo appearance against Crystal Palace, but this weekend United might need him to have a much larger role.
