Ange Postecoglou tipped to end Tottenham trophy drought but Champions League agony for new boss

Tottenham have a new head coach in Ange Postecoglou and the Australian is expected to bring a new style of football to the club.

The Spurs fans have been frustrated in recent seasons by not only the inconsistent performances but also the kind of football being served up by the team over the past half a decade. Postecoglou arrives with a reputation for fast, aggressive, attacking football that has brought trophies across his career, culminating in winning the domestic treble with Celtic.

The 57-year-old popped in to Hotspur Way for the first time on Friday - taking a temporary break in his well-earned holiday - and now he must start planning for the future and next season as he looks to make his mark on the struggling club.

We asked our Tottenham correspondents Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest to predict what they think next season will look like under Postecoglou.

The key word for those around Postecoglou is going to be patience. Everywhere he has gone it has taken a couple of months for him to start to embed his very different style and methods into the team and throughout the club. The lesson to be learned by Tottenham is that everywhere his methods have succeeded after those early rocky results and silverware often follows.

That means the players, the board and perhaps most importantly the fans need to give him time to implement whatever he needs to get his philosophy running through Spurs.

Pre-season is going to be crucial and the change in football style should be immediately noticeable in the early games of the season before it really gets into its swing as the campaign wears on.

Postecoglou also needs new players through the spine of the team that suit his 4-3-3 with a new goalkeeper, new centre-backs and attacking central midfielder in particular.

If he gets the arrivals he wants rather than ones the club like then the Australian could take Spurs up the table. While they might not have enough to get top four in his first season as he begins his transformation of the club, although the lack of midweek European fixtures will give him more time on the training pitches, I would not put it past Postecoglou to continue his own silverware run by finally ending Tottenham's drought with one of the domestic trophies.

It promises to be a very exciting season at Tottenham if everything clicks into place for Postecoglou. It's going to take time for the Spurs players to take on his methods and adapt to his ways, the players and fans just need to "trust the process" as the Lilywhites will be playing some very exciting and entertaining football under the 57-year-old if everyone buys into it.

Tottenham's 2023/24 campaign will all depend on the club's transfer activity, with a new goalkeeper, centre-backs, attacking midfielder and another attacking option all required. Spurs cannot afford to stand still and fall even further behind as all of their rivals will strengthen, with Chelsea and Liverpool unlikely to struggle again as was the case last term.

Patience is going to be required to begin with as it will take time for Postecoglou's philosophy to fully come to fruition, but when it is fully up and running then fans will be wowed and the players will love playing for him, especially the attackers as there could be goals galore. Regardless of no European football on the calendar for Tottenham next season, Postecoglou will want to attack the domestic trophies anyway and end Tottenham's trophy drought in the process.

My early prediction is EFL Cup success for the Lilywhites and a run to the latter stages of the FA Cup. In terms of the league, Spurs will make big strides and impress many with their attacking brand of football but they may have to settle for a Europa League place after just missing out on the top four.

Returning to the football they are known for and making many people sit up and take notice in the process, Postecoglou will make a huge impression at Tottenham in his first year in the Premier League. It will be the start of things to come under him in N17.
