Ange Postecoglou reckons Celtic winter break stance has been vindicated as alternative would have been 'ludicrous'

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has praised SPFL clubs and the Scottish Government for taking action for the "greater good" of the game by expediting the winter break.

10 top flight clubs were in favour of bringing forward the January shutdown to December 27, though Ross County and Rangers were notably against the decision and the resulting postponements of games such as the derby that was due to take place in Glasgow's east end on January 2.

And ahead of the Premiership's return on Monday with the Parkhead club's home clash against Hibs, fans were allowed to return back to stadia across the country with the 500-spectator limit lifted this week.

Postecoglou reckons that proves it was the right decision with just the Boxing Day fixtures affected by the rules temporarily brought in to curb the spread of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

He told the Celtic website : "It’s great for the game, there wouldn’t be a person involved in football who wouldn’t welcome that and I think it shows that clubs took the right course of action.

"And although we took the right course of action, we understood why the government had to do what it did at that time.

"But, as I said at the time, I thought it was quite logical with the natural break that our season has that other leagues don’t have, it would have been ludicrous to try and play through that without crowds.

"We gave ourselves at least an opportunity and the games are starting again and we’ve only really had one round without the fans in, and I think that’s a testament to the fact that I think everyone was looking at the greater good.

"And the greater good is that our supporters and clubs are hand-in-hand in making sure that games are played in full stadiums."
