Ange Postecoglou confirms major Tottenham blow as James Maddison worst fears realised

Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that James Maddison will miss the rest of Tottenham’s season with a knee injury.

Maddison was injured in last week’s 3-1 Europa League semi-final first-leg win against Bodo/Glimt and scans have revealed he is facing an extended period on the sidelines.

The midfielder has been ruled out of the final three weeks of the season, meaning he will miss the Europa League final in Bilbao on May 21 if Spurs get there, and is a doubt for the start of pre-season, too.

Losing Maddison is a major blow to Spurs, who will also be without Lucas Bergvall for the rest of the season due to an ankle injury.

Maddison has rediscovered some form in recent weeks and the 28-year-old has played a key role for Spurs on their run in Europe.

His creativity and guile will be a big miss for Postecoglou, who initially sounded positive about the injury after the first leg against Bodo/Glimt.

But it became clear the day after the game that the injury was more serious than first feared and subsequent scans have confirmed that.

Speaking in Norway on Wednesday ahead of the second leg, Postecoglou said: “Madders from the first leg, so he's out. He'll miss the rest of this season and it’s disappointing for him.

“I'm disappointed for him because he's been a real catalyst for us. He'll miss out but that's been the story of our season.”
