Anfield turns blue and yellow as Liverpool show support for Ukraine

Anfield has been lit up in the colours of the Ukrainian national flag as a mark of respect to the current harrowing scenes being witnessed in eastern Europe.

Russia began its invasion of Ukraine early on Thursday and the situation is continuing to develop at a rapid rate.

Many lives have already been lost, with the country's health minister claiming that 198 people have so far died since Vladimir Putin's decision to launch what he described as a 'special military operation'.

Russia's actions have already resulted in a massive international backlash and punishment of varying forms, including sporting restrictions.

Saint Petersburg have been stripped as the host city of the 2022 Champions League final, which will now be played in Paris.

Asked to provide his thoughts on the current scenes being witnessed in Ukraine, Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders admitted it has been hard to focus on tomorrow's Carabao Cup final with Chelsea.

"What's happening at the moment is truly awful," he told reporters yesterday afternoon at his pre-match press conference.

"It is so serious. Sitting here as a football coach in in front of sports journalists is not the right moment to speak my personal opinion. What I can say is that I'm a father, a brother, a son, a husband and a human being.

"We think about all the people there and it's really frightening at the moment. Each war is a true disappointment for mankind.

"It is also the right decision to move the Champions League final."

Reds captain Jordan Henderson added: "It's a scary situation for everyone.

"I'm not smart enough to speak on that topic but what I would say is that it's frightening to think what could happen and what is happening.

"We've just got to try and concentrate on what we're doing, but we see the news and what is going on. We have to try and focus on the game."
