Anfield falls silent as Liverpool FC remembers Heysel Stadium disaster

Liverpool FC remembered those who lost their lives in the Heysel Stadium disaster at Anfield today.

Senior representatives from Liverpool FC including manager Jurgen Klopp and captain Jordan Henderson gathered today at the Heysel memorial at the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand. As a mark of respect to those who died floral tributes were placed beside the memorial.

The club remembered the football fans who lost their lives at Heysel Stadium in Belgium on this day 37 years ago during Liverpool FC' s match v Juventus in the final of the European Cup. The tragic events in Block Z of the stadium led to the deaths of 39 people and left hundreds more injured.

Jurgen Klopp and Jordan Henderson arrived at Anfield shortly after 2pm in a Mercedes people carrier after landing at Liverpool John Lennon Airport earlier in the afternoon. The pair, dressed in LFC tracksuits embroidered with the Champions League logo, arrived back from Paris where the Reds lost 1-0 to Real Madrid.

Klopp and Henderson were joined at the memorial by Liverpool FC CEO, Billy Hogan. Mr Hogan had earlier said: “Our club has a rich history, which includes both times of joy and sorrow, and it’s important that we respectfully remember and reflect on the past whilst also celebrating our successes in the present and future.”

The three men laid wreaths at the memorial before joining LFC chaplain Bill Bygroves for a minute's silence. Mr Bygroves, who visited relatives of Juventus fans who died in the tragedy, also said some poignant words.

Earlier in the day the Mayor of Liverpool, Joanne Anderson, and the city's new Lord Mayor, Cllr Roy Gladden, had visited the memorial and laid their own wreaths. LFC players also observed a period of reflection at the AXA Training Centre to pay their respects following their return from Paris.

Around the rest of Anfield fans took photos around the stadium and bought flags, scarves and new football shirts ahead of the club's parade around the city. But behind the gates at the Sir Kenny Dalglish stand the club fell silent to remember those who lost their lives 37 years ago.
