Andy Robertson warns Liverpool teammates against complacency after Salzburg scare

Andy Robertson says Liverpool simply weren’t good enough against Salzburg…for 50 minutes at least.

And the brilliant defender believes the reason is simple enough - they got carried away with an epic first half performance, and started “doing things we shouldn't have done”.

Robertson was the star on the night for the Reds, scoring his first Champions League goal and helping create another two, but he warned that the Reds have to take a long hard look at themselves after cruising to a big lead.

“Three-nil up and you think you are going to be comfortable but we started probably doing things we shouldn't have done,” he explained.

“We let them back into the game and they are a good team. That's why that happened. We need to sort out that 50-minute period when we weren't good enough.”

The full back’s partner in crime Trent Alexander-Arnold was in total agreement. The pair produced an iconic image when they celebrated after the right back set up Robertson’s goal.

But the England defender believes complacency crept in as the English club dominated at Anfield. “We were doing really well and maybe took our foot off the gas and were a bit complacent and we were made to pay,” he said ruefully.

“It will be a good lesson for us. We got the win in the end but we were disappointed with the way the game went as going 3-0 up you should see the game out, keep the ball, tire out the opposition.

“But we carried on trying to push for goals and we need to learn from that and probably use our heads a bit more.”

Both are in agreement though: Liverpool at least showed bottle when they let the three goal lead slip, somehow subduing a rampant Salzburg, and then finding a winner.

“When when we went to 3-3 to show the character we did was important,” Robertson insisted. “When you don't play well it is important to get results and that's what we have done. We were very good first half but we need a complete performance and we need that on Saturday.”
