Andy Robertson's 'old fart' Celtic worry as left-back promises to give his best years if Parkhead return materialises

Andy Robertson would love to return to play for Celtic – but is worried he might be an "old fart" before he gets the chance.

The Scotland captain is just coming into the peak of his career at Liverpool and has already won the Premier League and the Champions League at Anfield.

Robertson rarely misses a minute under Jurgen Klopp and is preparing to lead Scotland out at their first major tournament in more than 20 years next summer.

But he is still a Celtic fan deep down and has claimed in the past he would be open to a potential return.

He played for his boyhood club at youth level but he was let go before he had the chance to make an impact at senior level and had to do it the hard way, starting his professional career with Queen's Park in League Two.

Eight years after leaving Scotland's bottom tier for Dundee United, he is one of the best left-backs in the world and he has no plans to leave Liverpool any time soon.

If he does get the chance to return to Celtic at some point, he says he would love to.

But only if he is still fit to wear the shirt.

“My aim is to finish my career at Liverpool but I know how tough it is to stay at the highest level," Robertson told PLZ Soccer.

“I would love to play for Celtic. When I was a young boy growing up I used to say I would give my best years to Celtic so I don’t want to go there when I am old and maybe can’t move as much and I get all my mates hating on because I can’t perform the way I used to.

“The time will come to make that decision but I have a good length of time on my Liverpool contract.

“I would love to pull on the Celtic shirt, of course I would. But I don’t want to be an old fart when I go up there. I want to still be able to play well and if I can’t I don’t want my mates hating on me!”

Robertson's focus is on what's in front of him for now though - two warmup friendlies with Scotland followed by a European Championship.

And despite Steve Clarke 's team being rank outsiders in Group D, he says they aren't going just to make up the numbers.

They're going to make their mark on on England, the Czech Republic and Croatia and hopefully make the knockout stage for the first time in Scottish football history.

Robertson said: "We're not just there to make up the numbers. We've played Czech Republic in the Nations League and got good results against them, and they're an incredibly good team.

"I've played against Soucek and Coufal for West Ham and I know how good these players are, but we're there to get out the group, and we have to believe that.

"If we can get off to a good start, who knows where it will take us?"
