Andy Robertson's Liverpool off-night as Scotland star makes key mistake in shock Champions League defeat

If only Andy Robertson could do for Liverpool what he does for Scotland, eh?

Steve Clarke's captain is normally Mr Consistency at club level, and starred against Newcastle at the weekend as he assisted Sadio Mane for the opening goal.

Having just about overcome a brief injury scare, he passed a late fitness test to make the starting XI for his side's Champions League opener in Naples.

He ended up having a game to forget, however, as his side fell to a 2-0 defeat, largely thanks to some clumsy defending from the 25-year-old.

There was an element of controversy about it, but it was clumsy defending from the left-back, who gave the referee a decision to make after committing to a challenge against Jose Callejon in the area.

Dries Mertens stepped up to convert the resulting penalty, but Robertson 's misery didn't even end there.

He was caught sleeping along with Virgil van Dijk as stoppage time loomed, and afterthe centre-back's stray pass sailed past the stranded Scot,  Fernando Llorente was on hand to poke home a second.

He'll be no stranger to Naples disappointment, as his side suffered a 1-0 defeat at the Stadio San Paolo early last October.

They did manage to win the reverse of that one at Anfield to make sure of their passage into the knockout stages - a feat they may have to repeat if they are to win Group E.

They host Red Bull Salzburg at Anfield in their next Champions League outing on October 2nd, before Robertson heads out to join Scotland for clashes with Russia and San Marino.
