Andy Robertson reaps Liverpool rewards as Scotland captain crowned social media king

Liverpool star Andy Robertson has been crowned king of Scotland's social media with more than double the followers of his closest rival.

The former Dundee United left-back has come a long way from his now famous tweets about being unemployed while playing amateur football for Queen's Park.

And the Liverpool man alone now has almost as many social media followers as the rest of the Scotland squad combined.

The Premier League winner has 4.4 million followers across his Twitter (1.4m) and Instagram (2.9m) accounts. Manchester United ’s central midfielder Scott McTominay comes second with 1.9m while Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney places third with 1.6m.

Indeed, Robertson's total almost matches that of the rest of Steve Clarke's squad combined, as they boast 4.8m between them.

The research and analysis was conducted by the public relations, digital and football agency PMPR Excellence  to analyse social media influence within the Scotland national team.

The research logged the total number of followers of the Scotland Men’s A Squad across three social media platforms: Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Even Robertson can't compete with the most followed accounts on social media's biggest platforms, however.

Former US president Barack Obama has the most on Twitter with 123m, Cristiano Ronaldo has 238m on Instagram and the Portuguese superstar also leads on Facebook with 135m followers.
