Andy Robertson rallies Scotland troops as captain backs Steve Clarke to end 22 years of hurt

Andy Robertson has urged his Scotland team-mates to forget past failures and focus on a bright future.

The national team haven't qualified for a major tournament since the 1998 World Cup - when the Liverpool left-back was just four years old.

Since then there have been near misses and some dismal qualifying campaigns, but October will see Scotland face Israel to set up a crunch tie with Serbia or Norway to end over two decades of hurt.

And the skipper is convinced Steve Clarke’s side can get to a rescheduled Euro 2020 via the play-offs, as they look to set up home ties with Croatia and the Czech Republic as well as a trip to Wembley to face England.

Robertson, who scored for Liverpool in their 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday afternoon, said: “It’d mean the world to me to lead Scotland to a major finals. That needs to happen but we can’t think about the 22 years that have passed.

“We can only affect the future. I believe we’ve got the manager and squad to do it, now we have to prove it.”
