Andy Robertson injury setback for Liverpool as Scotland skipper undergoes surgery

Liverpool star Andy Robertson has suffered a minor setback ahead of the new season.

The Scotland skipper had to sit out a number of drills after undergoing surgery on a hand infection - and will miss Sunday's friendly against Bradford.

Robertson returned to Melwood on Saturday with his right hand and wrist heavily bandaged after going under the knife.

And the 25-year-old was unable to immediately take part in the usual test and drills as Liverpool 's medical staff continue to monitor his rehabilitation from the procedure.

However he WILL be among the Reds' squad heading to the US next week for their pre-season tour.

A post on the club’s offical website this morning said: "Andy Robertson has undergone a minor procedure on his hand after picking up an infection.

"The defender reported back for pre-season training on Saturday morning but will be temporarily delayed in participating in the usual tests and drills, with the club’s medical team continuing to monitor his rehabilitation from the surgery.

"Robertson will travel to the United States for the Reds’ pre-season tour next week."

Robertson reported back to Melwood on Saturday morning along with fellow Champions League winners Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum.

Rangers target Ryan Kent returned to training seven days ago and impressed in a friendly run out against Tranmere on Thursday.

Steven Gerrard is eager to take the 22-year-old winger back to Ibrox on loan after he impressed last season.

But Jurgen Klopp wants to cast a closer eye over the player on Liverpool's tour of the States during which time they will take on Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla and Sporting LIsbon.
