Andy Robertson explains why Jordan Henderson is the Premier League's player of the year

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson believes that Jordan Henderson can finally get the recognition his performances deserve by being named as the Premier League's player of the year.

Reds captain Henderson has been the driving force behind many of the performances that have taken Liverpool to within 18 points of their first top-flight title since 1990.

Jurgen Klopp's side have opened up a 22-point gap on closest challengers Manchester City, and look set to wrap up the earliest ever Premier League title victory in the coming weeks should their results continue in their current vein.

Robertson feels that Henderson's displays have stood out this season, and have ensured that the club's standards have never slipped in the title race.

"For me, I think he's the leading candidate [for player of the year]," Robertson told Sky Sports News.

"At times this season when we've struggled Hendo has been the one that has driven us forward.

"He's the one who has made sure we don't get slack, or he has chipped in with some really important goals or really important assists.

"Maybe his performances at the start of the season went a little bit under the radar, but as the season has progressed he's not really had a bad game.

"You really appreciate him when you train with him every day and in this country he's not been appreciated enough in his character.

"He's getting the recognition he deserves because he is a fantastic player, a fantastic role model and a fantastic captain. He's driven us to three points at times this season when we've struggled."

Liverpool continue their campaign at Norwich City on Saturday evening, with both Robertson and Henderson ready to feature as the Reds return from their winter break.
