Andy Robertson explains why Celtic icon Billy McNeill was on his mind during Champions League celebrations

Andy Robertson lifted the famous old trophy above his head and in the back of his mind was Billy McNeill .

Liverpool's Champions League triumph over Tottenham last week saw the follow in the footsteps of Celtic 's iconic captain, a fact that was not lost on the Scotland captain.

McNeill was the first ever Scot to get his hands on European football's most coveted silverware in 1967 and only a select few have followed since.

Robertson , a Celtic fan, admits he couldn't help but think of Cesar as the party got started in Madrid, especially following his sad passing and that of fellow Lisbon Lion Stevie Chalmers over the past two months.

He said: "It is very rare. That is what you start to realise.

"Maybe more so this year than last year. A lot has been said up in Scotland because of Billy McNeill’s passing, the fact the person from these islands who lifted it for the first time was Scottish.

"It has been an emotional time for people up here to see him go, and Stevie Chalmers as well.

“My picture won’t go as big as his, but it was still a special moment to get my hands on the trophy he lifted.”

Meanwhile, Robertson is desperate to replicate his Liverpool success with Scotland.

The skipper will lead Steve Clarke's side out against Cyprus later on Saturday knowing that only victory will keep the Euro 2020 qualifying campaign alive.

He added: "I want more of those feelings that I had on Saturday. I want to win more trophies for Liverpool and bring success to Scotland.

“To do that, we need to go again, we’ve got a new start now and we need to qualify for the Euros because that would be as special I feel.

“It does make me more determined. Having those happy feelings, those success feelings, I want to have that a lot more and I am sure all the lads want to experience it now.

“I knew what we were going for and how good it would be to win the Champions League. But the feelings I felt were something I couldn’t imagine.

“But leading your country out in a major tournament, I know from the lads back in Liverpool that it is a huge honour, and hopefully we can experience that by qualifying for a Euros or a World Cup.”
