Andy Robertson desperate for Liverpool to avoid another Champions League group stage scrap with Napoli

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson is out to avoid another nail-biting climax to the Champions League group stages by picking up three important points at Napoli on Tuesday.

The Reds only secured a knockout berth in last season’s competition by beating Tuesday's opponents at Anfield on the sixth and final match day of the group section.

Things would have been far more comfortable for Jurgen Klopp’s team had they not lost all three away games prior to that, including a 1-0 defeat to Napoli at Stadio San Paolo.

As such, Robertson sees Tuesday’s rematch as an opportunity to take an early stranglehold on the group.

He said: “The group is going to be tough but that’s the chance we’ve got, the chance to win and get three points from the second seeds.

“We know how close it was between us and them last season, it was so important that we won the home game.

“We’ll look to be more comfortable this season hopefully going through the group stages because it was a wee bit close for comfort last season.

“The way to do that is by putting in a good performance and getting off to a good start.”

Napoli’s home success against Liverpool last term came courtesy of a 90th-minute Lorenzo Insigne strike.

But, while they only scored late on, the hosts were more than deserved winners, and Robertson is under no illusions that he and his teammates must perform better this time around.

"The result followed the performance and the performance wasn’t good enough,” he added.

“It was poor from our perspective in all the away games really last season in the group stages, we didn’t really perform. We need to be better than that.

“We know what Naples is like but now we can focus on it and it’s the start of us trying to retain the Champions League, that’s what happens and we look forward to that challenge.

“It starts in Naples, it doesn’t get much harder, but we look forward to it.”
