Andy Reid slams Jason McAteer for 'very strange' Brian Kerr comments

Andy Reid has taken issue with ex-teammate Jason McAteer's 'very strange' comments on former Republic of Ireland manager Brian Kerr.

Appearing on Bein Sports, McAteer spoke about how he felt about Kerr when he took over from Mick McCarthy. McAteer felt as though Jack Charlton and McCarthy had the instant respect of the players because of what they had done in their playing careers. As Kerr had no such career, McAteer claims the players didn't have the same level of respect for the League of Ireland legend.

"I'll be brutally honest here," began McAteer, "I played for Jack Charlton who won the World Cup and Instantly had the respect of the whole dressing room."

"Then Mick McCarthy came in who was a big figure in the Republic of Ireland, we looked up to him, we did what he wanted to do and we ended up running through brick walls for him. We got success and we got to the World Cup.

"Then Brian Kerr took over and I've got to admit and I'll say it now, I'm looking at this fella thinking 'What have you actually done?'

"We were having words with each other and I'm thinking 'you're trying to tell me to do this and do that, but what have you won in the game? what have you done in the game?

"Where have you played? Who have you played for? You're trying to implement these things and talk down to players."

McAteer's comments have already caused quite the stir on social media. Andy Reid has responded, and the former Tottenham Hotspur and Ireland player has taken aim at McAteer for his comments.

"Very strange comments. There’s a whole load of us that worked with Brian from when we were kids and we’d have run through brick walls for him and Noel O’Reilly," began Reid's Tweet, "Even the ones that didn’t work with him from young respected him."

Kerr took over as Ireland manager in 2003 following a successful spell as manager of the underage National Teams. Kerr's teams won both the under 16 and under 18 European Championships in 1998, and is considered to have helped develop Damien Duff and Robbie Keane amongst others in their early careers.

The 69-year-old was dismissed as manager two years into his reign after failing to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
