Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes narrowly avoided serious injury during the 2019 NFL season. Mahomes suffered a patella dislocation injury during the Week 7 win over the Denver Broncos and missed two games before returning to face the Tennessee Titans in Week 10. Mahomes would go on to lead the Chiefs to victory in Super Bowl LIV.
Initially following the injury to Mahomes there some reports that Mahomes would need offseason surgery in order to stabilize his kneecap and avoid the risk of reinjury in the future. Chiefs HC Andy Reid was asked about the possibility of surgery this offseason for Mahomes and it doesn’t appear to be something they’re considering at this time.
“Right now, he looks good,” Reid said of Mahomes. “He was out throwing with Dez (Bryant) the other day. He looked like he was slinging it around pretty good. So yeah, I think he’s fine.”
Mahomes made it through the Super Bowl without any issues and his exit physical didn’t reveal any issues that would require surgery. Remember, we learned that Mahomes’ knees are unique and essentially double-jointed. That appears to be playing a role in his health and recovery from this specific type of injury.
A healthy offseason for Mahomes without rehabilitation and injury recovery should make the goal of a repeat Super Bowl much more achievable in Kansas City.
