Andy Reid expects Chiefs to promote QB Kyle Shurmur from practice squad

The Kansas City Chiefs have a need for a new backup quarterback.

Patrick Mahomes is sidelined indefinitely after dislocating his kneecap, and Matt Moore has been thrust into the starting role for the Chiefs. While no decisions have been made on a new backup QB just yet, Andy Reid has a good idea about whom the Chiefs will call upon.

“I haven’t had a chance to visit with (general manager Brett) Veach,” Reid said in a conference call on Friday. “We brought everybody in late today. We’re just kind of getting started here. I would imagine that we would probably bring a practice squad player up – Kyle Shurmur up – and go from there. I can’t guarantee that for you as we go, but it would be one thought, for sure. And then let Matt get the reps and go, if that’s where we’re at here. But again, I don’t have all of the information for you on that.”

Reid didn’t have all the information on the extent of Mahomes’ injury and wouldn’t really commit to any course of action. Still, he thinks that Shurmur will be the guy and he should be. Short of Chad Henne, Shurmur has the most experience in this offense of anyone under team control. Henne is not yet eligible to return from injured reserve, so this seems to be the logical course of action.

There’s always a chance that Veach has something up his sleeve, but at this point, if the team believes Mahomes can return there’s no reason to give up valuable draft capital for a QB. Instead, this situation should allow some valuable opportunities for a young player like Shurmur.
