Andy Reid expects Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes to do more in practice this week

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was a limited participant in practice for the entirety of Week 8 leading up to the game against the Green Bay Packers.

He ultimately didn’t play in that game but that wasn’t his decision. Andy Reid and the Kansas City training staff shut him down but Reid believed it wouldn’t be long before his return to action.

“He did quite a bit,” Reid said on Friday, “He’s close.”

Now as the Chiefs prepare to face the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9, Mahomes will continue practicing. It’s not yet clear if he’ll show as practicing in full on the post-practice report, however, Reid expects him to do more this week in practice.

“He probably will,” Reid said of Mahomes. “A little bit more, yeah.”

Part of managing Mahomes and this injury will be not allowing him to do too much too quickly. As we know, Mahomes is the ultimate competitor and will be pushing himself to get back out on the field. So what is Reid watching for this week that will tell him Mahomes is good to go?

“Well, movement,” Reid explained on Wednesday. “We do enough stuff where he’s got to move around. You get a chance to see him. He’s moving pretty good, you guys got a chance to see him before our game. He was out there running around. And then I obviously communicate with the doctors.”

So keep an eye this week on any of the videos from warm-ups in practice. If Mahomes looks a bit sprier than last week and receives a good report from the doctors, we could very well see Mahomes suit up against the Vikings in Week 9.
