Andy Reid confirms Eric Berry won’t have offseason surgery

Ahead of Andy Reid’s podium session at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine he had a brief aside with several local Kansas City reporters. He discussed a few different topics, but the most significant was the status of Chiefs’ star safety Eric Berry.

Chiefs fans have been wondering the what the plan is with Berry, who missed the majority of the 2019 season with a heel injury. Brett Veach had commented a few weeks ago that Berry was getting a second opinion on his heel issues. This sparked some speculation of what might be coming for Berry.

The assumption was that he’d have offseason surgery on what is reported a Haglund’s Deformity in his right heel. Reid provided clarity on that situation and confirmed that Eric Berry would not be getting offseason surgery. Doctors did not recommend Berry have surgery to repair this seemingly recurring issue with his heel. Reid explained that the expectation for Eric Berry is to be healthy this summer and heading into the 2019 season. There is also an expectation that Berry remains a member of the Chiefs.

I’m not sure if Chiefs fans will continue to hear the term day-to-day for Berry. I do believe the team will be more cautious with Berry during the 2019 offseason program and preseason, even with the expectation that he’ll be healthy. Ultimately we don’t know what Berry’s contributions will look like during the 2019 season, and while optimism is nothing new when it comes to this injury, hopefully the outcome is different moving forward.
